Advocating for Equity: End Period Poverty MN
Description:
You wouldn’t expect students to walk into a restroom at their school and realize they were expected to bring their own toilet paper…so why should another basic need like menstrual hygiene products be any different? One in five teens say they have struggled to afford period products, and more than four in five have missed class time or know somebody that has because of it. When students and school professionals brought this barrier to the attention of NCJW in 2018, it was clear that action needed to be taken to keep students in school, learning, and thriving. The resulting “End Period Poverty MN” campaign culminated this spring with the inclusion of funding for menstrual products in the 2023 K-12 Education Policy and Finance bill.
Learn about how NCJW and its partners used research, coalition-building, and the power of storytelling to pass menstrual equity legislation for MN schools. Hopefully, you will leave feeling inspired to use your voice to advocate for important public health issues in your personal networks and at the Capitol.
By the end of the webinar presentation:
Participants will understand two ways that individual and community advocacy can lead to policies that promote public health.
