9:00-10:30a: The Case for Size Inclusive Public Health

Claire Weiss and Selena Salfen will introduce attendees to the principles, evidence-base and benefits of size inclusive practices in public health and healthcare. Attendees will learn about the potential harms of "obesity prevention" and weight stigma in public health. They will learn how addressing anti-fat bias in public health aligns with trauma informed and patient centered principles in public health and healthcare. Claire and Selena will introduce Saint Paul - Ramsey Public Health's weight inclusive work and provide resources for further education and creating size inclusive public health policy, systems and environmental changes.

Selena Salfen Bio:

Selena Salfen, MPH, RD (she/her) leads Saint Paul-Ramsey County Public Health's Size Inclusive Ramsey County (SIRC) initiative through the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) grant. She has worked with Ramsey County programs and clinics, including WIC, Public Health in Public Places, the Mental Health Clinic and more, to make sustainable, size inclusive policy, systems and environmental changes. SIRC has also partnered with BE REAL to create Let's Eat, a food neutral, weight neutral nutrition and eating curriculum for adolescents.

Claire Weiss Bio:

Claire Weiss (she/her) is finishing her MPH at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, with a focus in community health promotion and weight inclusivity. She is a Weight Inclusivity Specialist Consultant for Ramsey County Public Health, and the Youth Programs Coordinator at myHealth for Teens and Young Adults. Her passions and research have roots in fat liberation, and she strives to create equitable, weight-neutral, and welcoming environments through her work.

Objectives

1.) By the end of this session, participants will be able to list three ways why weight stigma can be harmful.

2.) By the end of this session, participants will be able to identify two ways public health can avoid weight stigma in public health communications.

Who should participate:  Public health professionals and students, healthcare professionals.

FREE for all participants, and free 1.0 CHES for MN SOPHE Members.  For nonmembers: 1.0 CHES are $10.  All participants will receive a certificate of attendance after participating and completing the evaluation form.
